Dental implant surgery – the process
Treatment is normally divided into 2 or 4 phases

• Phase 1 – Pre-operative Assessment

  Before your implants can be placed, X-rays and impressions of your mouth will be taken. These help us plan your treatment precisely and ensure the best possible fit for your implant and restoration.

• Phase 2 – Implant Placement (Stage 1)

  This stage is performed under local anaesthetic. The gum is gently lifted from the bone, and a small space is created in the jaw to insert the implant. The gum is then closed with dissolvable stitches. Healing normally takes one to two weeks.

• Phase 3 Healing and Stage 2 Placement

  After approximately three months, the implant area is checked using an X-ray to confirm that it has fully integrated with the bone. The gum is then reopened and a small healing abutment is fitted to prepare for the next stage of treatment.

• Phase 4 – Restorative treatment
  

  You’ll return for two to four appointments, depending on whether you’re having a crown, bridge, or denture. During these visits, we’ll take impressions and check the fit of your new restoration to ensure it feels comfortable and natural.

• The local anaesthetic will wear off after about two hours. Avoid eating or drinking anything hot during this time to prevent burns.

• When you return home, take any prescribed painkillers or antibiotics as directed. If you experience any reaction to medication, please contact the clinic.

• Stick to soft, tepid meals for the first few days after surgery. Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least two weeks, as both can delay healing.

• You may notice slight swelling or bruising around the surgical area. This is normal and should ease after a few days. You can use an ice pack for short periods during the first six hours to help reduce swelling.

• Begin gentle saltwater rinses 24 hours after surgery. Mix a quarter to half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gently bathe the area twice daily for two weeks. Avoid vigorous rinsing or swishing.

• If bleeding continues beyond 24–48 hours, apply gentle pressure using damp gauze for 20–30 minutes. If bleeding persists or worsens, please contact the clinic.

• Try to sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first 24 hours. Avoid strenuous activity for several days.

• Maintain a high-protein diet to support healing — soft foods such as eggs, cottage cheese, soup, or milk products are ideal.

• What are the benefits of dental implants?

  With proper oral care and regular check-ups, implants can last for many years — often for life.

• Are there any alternatives to implants?
