At Wentworth Clinic our plastic surgeon offers two cheek augmentation treatment options:

  • Solid implants – (as a standalone treatment or combined with other aesthetic procedures )
  • Soft tissue implants – using either the patient’s own fat or synthetic materials such as hyaluronic acid

Our plastic surgeon will carry out a full examination and advise on your suitability for the augmentation procedure, as well as discuss materials used, benefits and disadvantages of the procedure, and also whether you may require any other simultaneous aesthetic procedures to obtain the facial balance you are looking for.

At Wentworth Clinic, we do not support soft silicone implants for two reasons.  One, they cannot be stabilised and secondly, over the years, they can cause resorption of the overlying bone and further deformity.

Type of anaesthesia for cheek implants surgery

Although it is possible to place a cheek implant under local anaesthetic, it should ideally be carried out under a general anaesthetic.  The majority of cheek implants are carried out with other aesthetic procedures.

Types of Implants - Cheek Implants, Cheek Augmentation

There are two types of implants:

  • Solid Implants
    We use a solid implant called, ‘Medpor’ – the implant placed through an incision from the buccal sulcus intraorally (within the mouth), between the gum and lip inside the mouth.  The implant placement is just above the bone and is usually stabilised by a titanium screw.
  • Soft Implants
    Soft tissue implants are either: using the patient’s own fat, or synthetic materials such as hyaluronic acid, as used in dermal fillers.

 

The Procedure - Cheek Implants

The Procedure

  • A suitable implant is planned for the size and shape.
  • The implant is soaked in an antibiotic mixture.
  • An incision is made in the upper buccal sulcus.
  • A tunnel is created in order to expose the area where the implant is to be placed.
  • The implant is positioned and then stabilised with a titanium screw.

An implant can be placed on its own, or as part of other aesthetic procedures.

Post Treatment Care - Cheek Implants

If you have general anaesthesia, the recovery from the anaesthetic will take 1-2 weeks.  It is important that you should not carry out any active duties for 48 hours following the procedure.

Following Cheek Implant surgery you should:

  • Take the medication as prescribed.
  • It is important to keep the mouth clean, particularly where the incision has been made, with good brushing and warm salty water gargling.
  • Avoid energetic or gym exercises for 1 week.
  • Avoid contact sports etc for 6 weeks.
  • Any bruising and swelling will gradually settle down over a period of 7-10 days.
  • If you have undue persistent pain, you should contact the clinic.
  • Any other specific instructions will be given to you at the time of your discharge.
