Oral Surgery

The following advise will encourage wound healing.

First 24 hours

• After surgery bite the pack provided for 30 minutes.
• Do not rinse your mouth out for the first night.
• Do not take alcohol or smoke immediately post operatively.
• Food and drink may be taken, but with obvious care. Avoid anything too hot. Eat soft foods.
•  If the area begins to bleed, place a moistened handkerchief over the area and bite firmly for 15 minutes.
• If painkillers have not been prescribed, take Paracetamol or Nurofen as described on the packet. Take painkillers regularly for the first 48 hours.
• If antibiotics have been prescribed, take them at regular intervals and complete the course.
• Spend the day quietly at home.

Day following surgery

• Gently brush remaining teeth. You could get some bleeding but do not be alarmed. After brushing you need to gargle with warm, salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water). You need to maintain this for a minimum of twice a day until you come for your post operative consolation.

After 24 hours

The following conditions may occur and are considered normal following treatment:

• The face of the operated side may swell considerably and be bruised.
• There may be stiffness of the join muscle making it difficult to open the mouth.
• A sore throat may develop.
• Teeth adjacent tot he operation site may ache or feel tender for a short time.
• If the corners of your mouth have been stretched during surgery, they may dry and crack. Apply Vaseline to keep them moistened.
• There may be a cavity where the tooth was removed. It will gradually fill with new tissue.
• If a stitch has been used, it will dissolve in a few weeks.
• Occasionally, there may be an area of prolonged numbness at the corner of the mouth or side of the tongue. Care must be taken not to burn, or bit the lip or tongue.

• Use regular mouthwashes (i.e. a teaspoon of salt in a glass of hot water) for the first 3-4 days, particularly after consuming food.

• A sore throat may develop
