Birthmarks can appear on any part of the body, on both men and women. Though many are unconcerned by those that are hidden beneath clothing, there are instances, on the face, arms and legs that can cause you to feel uncomfortable and self-consciousness.
Laser and surgical birthmark removal
Wentworth Clinic offers surgical and non-surgical birthmark removal treatments at our Bournemouth Clinic. The surgical procedure includes primary excision and repair. The non-surgical procedures include ablation with either a vascular laser or an ablative laser.
Types of Birthmark
Birthmarks are pigmented or non-pigmented skin lesions. Pigmented lesions are caused by excess skin pigment cells, and can appear with or without hair.
Common birthmarks include:
- Moles
- Café au lait spots
- Mongolian spots
- Red birthmarks – port wine stain
- Haemangiomas (Strawberry marks)
Red pigmentation birthmarks can be caused by the overgrowth of blood vessels, melanocytes, smooth muscle, fat or keratinocytes.
Private consultation with our skin specialist
At your private consultation, our qualified skin consultant will perform an examination and usually make a diagnosis of your birthmark. He will advise on, and explain the most suitable treatment options for your particular condition. He will also discuss the desired outcome, complications and limitations of the birthmark removal procedure at this time. If laser treatment is suitable then a patch test may be necessary.
The procedure is usually designed to improve aesthetics and sometimes also the function, depending upon the size of the lesion.
