Following on from Part 1 of our Rhinoplasty Q&A series, this article focuses on the recovery period after surgery.
One of the most common concerns patients have before rhinoplasty surgery is what recovery will actually fell like day to day. While everyone heals slightly differently, there are typical patterns most patients can expect.
Here we answer some of the questions patients most often ask about rhinoplasty recovery, including discomfort, swelling, breathing, returning to work and resuming normal activities.
How painful is rhinoplasty recovery?
Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort in the first week after surgery. Discomfort is usually most noticeable in the first 24 hours and then settles steadily over the following days.
Pain is generally well controlled with medication provided after the procedure.
How long does swelling last after rhinoplasty?
Some swelling is expected after surgery.
Most visible swelling settles within the first two weeks. However, the tip of the nose can remain slightly swollen for several weeks whilst healing continues.
This is a normal part of the recovery process.
Is bruising around the eyes normal?
Yes. Bruising around the eyes is common following rhinoplasty.
This usually improves within the first couple of weeks as swelling settles.
How blocked will my nose feel after surgery?
Nasal blockage is common during the first week of recovery while the tissues inside the nose are healing.
Breathing typically becomes easier as swelling gradually reduces.
When can I return to work?
Most patients allow around two weeks away from work and normal routines following rhinoplasty.
This allows time for early swelling and bruising to settle.
When can I exercise again?
Light activity such as walking can usually begin after three or four days.
More structured cardiovascular exercise can normally resume in the second week, depending on how recovery is progressing.
When is it safe to fly?
Flying is generally safe around one week after surgery, provided recovery is progressing normally.
Your surgeon will advise if any additional precautions are needed.
Can I wear glasses after rhinoplasty?
Most patients are able to continue wearing glasses during recovery. Your surgeon will advise if any adjustments are needed in the early healing period.
How should I care for my nose after surgery?
During the early recovery period:
- The nose is cleaned twice a day.
- Prescribed creams are applied as advised.
- If an open rhinoplasty approach is used, ointment is applied to the small incision beneath the columella for approximately one week.
When should I contact the clinic after surgery?
While most recovery follows a predictable pattern, you should contact the clinic if you experience unexpected symptoms or concerns during healing.
Your surgical team will provide clear guidance on what to watch for after the procedure.
