Introduction:
Understanding what rhinoplasty can realistically improve is one of the most important parts of planning surgery. Many patients aren’t looking for dramatic changes; they simply want their nose to sit more comfortably with the rest of their features.
In this part of our Q&A series, Professor Ilankovan answers some of the most common questions about results, subtle changes, and what to expect as your nose continues to heal and the swelling reduces. How much difference can rhinoplasty make?
Rhinoplasty can make a significant difference, but it doesn’t need to be dramatic to be effective. Often, relatively small adjustments to the bridge, tip or overall proportions can bring the nose into better balance with the rest of the face.
The aim isn’t to create a different nose, but to refine what’s already there so it sits more naturally with your features.
Can small changes make a noticeable improvement?
Yes, they often do. The nose sits at the centre of the face, so even minor changes can have a noticeable impact on overall appearance.
Subtle refinements can soften a profile, improve symmetry, and help other features feel more proportionate, without it being obvious that surgery has been performed.
Can I bring photos of noses I like?
Patients are welcome to bring photos, and these can be helpful in understanding the kind of changes you have in mind.
However, they are used as a guide rather than a target. Every face is different, and the goal is always to create a result that suits your own features rather than replicates someone else’s nose.
Will my nose suit my face after surgery?
That is always the intention. Rhinoplasty is planned with the whole face in mind, not just the nose on its own.
Facial proportions, angles and structure are carefully assessed to guide the approach, so the result looks balanced and natural.
What happens if I don’t like the result?
It’s important to allow time for the nose to settle fully before judging the final outcome, as early changes can be influenced by swelling.
In the small number of cases where concerns remain once healing is complete, revision rhinoplasty can be considered. This is usually approached cautiously and only after a full assessment.
How long does it take to see final results?
You will notice changes quite early on, but the final result takes longer to develop.
Most of the visible swelling settles within the first few weeks, but more subtle swelling, particularly around the tip, can take several months to resolve. Final results are typically seen between six and twelve months after surgery.
Does swelling affect how the result looks early on?
Yes, swelling plays a significant role in the early stages.
The nose can appear slightly fuller or less defined while it is healing, which is completely normal. As the swelling gradually reduces, the shape becomes more refined and closer to the planned outcome.
